Oberschwaben - Von Wolfegg zur Waldburg

A short excursion takes us from Wolfegg in Upper Swabia to nearby Waldburg Castle, the ancestral seat of the originally Welf-Hohenstaufen ministerial family, whose branches extend far beyond Upper Swabia. Wolfegg's Renaissance castle, with its four wings, was built at the end of the 16th century, modeled after the castle in Meßkirch. Parts of Wolfegg Castle were destroyed by Swedish troops in 1646 during the Thirty Years' War. Reconstruction took place between 1651 and 1700. The castle is only open to the public twice a year for major international concert series, as it is inhabited by the princely family of Waldburg-Wolfegg-Waldsee. The neighboring parish church of St. Catherine was completed in 1736 and is one of the most magnificent Baroque churches in Upper Swabia. Until its secularization in 1806, it served as the collegiate church of an affiliated Augustinian monastery. The neo-Baroque tall bell tower was added in 1906. Key pieces of the interior furnishings are altars dating from 1736. The high altar depicts the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. The ceiling fresco portrays a legendary duel from 1487, which led to the founding of the abbey. After a stroll through the town center, we leave Wolfegg heading southwest to Waldburg, 12 km away, where we first visit the parish church of St. Magnus at the foot of the castle hill. The ancestral castle of the Waldburg family of stewards and imperial princes, built in the 12th century, sits atop a drumlin formed during the Würm Ice Age at an altitude of 722 m. In the mid-16th century, the castle was expanded into a palatial residence and seat of power. The no longer inhabited castle now houses a museum in its palace with interesting exhibits on the Middle Ages and the castle's history.
