It is located around 2 miles (3 km) west of Erskine. There was a Roman Fort at Bishopton which was discovered from aerial photographs in 1949. The fort is about 1 km (0.6 mi) west of the village. It overlooked the former ford at Dumbuck,on a flat-topped hill around 60 metres (200 ft) above the river, allowing ready surveillance of the River Clyde.
