No bird nests on any sewing machine plus thread a White 1735
Bird nesting is a common problem for all sewists. It's when you start sewing and the thread tangles underneath on the bottom of the fabric. It can happen on any machine. Rarely is it the machine - probably 90% of the time it’s user error. There are two main habits to develop to avoid bird nests. One is truly learning how to thread your machine. You might think you know, but if you’re not putting tension properly on the upper thread and on the bobbin, you'll get a birds nest. On the upper thread, this means having your presser foot UP when you thread, so the thread actually goes through the tension discs. On the Bobbin side you’re going to have to feel proper tension too. This is especially true with top loading bobbins that don’t go in the metal case. Metal cases put tension on bobbin thread more automatically. The second major reason people get bird nests is because they don’t start their stitches right. You must hold BOTH threads in their left hand. That's not all! Your needle must be IN the fabric. Start every stitch by rolling the hand wheel towards you to sink the needle into the fabric. Now, you're ready to hit the foot pedal. Just try and get a bird's nest after doing these things. I dare you. By following these two practices and making them a habit, you will not get bird nests. And if you do, now you know it's a machine (or needle/thread) issue. Sometimes it's trying to sew thick seams too. Watch my upcoming video on that topic. (spoiler alert - don't sew thick seams with the foot pedal, hand wheel over them). This video doesn’t cover the use of Leaders, but you can also research that as an alternative. Some people intentionally let the first stitch bird nest on a scrap piece of fabric, called a "leader" and cut those off. It's like the first pancake being a throwaway. But that's more work to me and wasted time/fabric creating leaders. Plus, they don't work flawlessly and an older needle can snag and get stuck. this video happens to be made on a white 1735 heavy duty machine. So that’s what I’m showing as far as threading technique However, the skills and tips apply to any machine.
