I tested Thailand's biggest DATING Apps for a MONTH in Bangkok; Bumble, Tinder, Coffee Meets Bagel & ThaiFriendly. If you want to understand Bangkok, don't start with the temples. Start with the dating apps... Over the last month, I spent time on four of Thailand's biggest dating platforms: Tinder, Bumble, Coffee Meets Bagel and ThaiFriendly. I wasn't trying to create a "best dating app" ranking. What interested me was something else. The more time I spent on these apps, the less they felt like dating platforms and the more they felt like maps. Maps of different versions of Bangkok. A city where a software engineer, market vendor, airline crew member, business owner and lottery ticket salesperson can all share the same BTS carriage while living very different lives. In this video I compare Thailand's biggest dating apps, discuss the cultures that form around them, and explore what they reveal about modern Bangkok, identity, social signalling, reinvention and the people building new lives in Southeast Asia.
