The Reconquista begin with a handful of desperate Visigothic nobles in the mountains of Asturias. In this episode, we trace the early Reconquista, from the Battle of Guadalete and the rapid Muslim conquest of Iberia by Umayyad and Berber armies, to the rise of Pelagius of Asturias and his legendary stand at the Battle of Covadonga (718) in the Picos de Europa. We follow the creation of a tiny Asturian kingdom, the campaigns of Alfonso I and Alfonso III, and decisive clashes like Mount Laturce and Polvoraria, where Christian armies ambushed and defeated powerful Andalusian forces. These early victories laid the foundations for the later Kingdom of León, the expansion into Galicia and Portugal, and ultimately the long struggle that ended with the fall of Granada in 1492.
