Memórias de luta na Serra da Barriga

Exactly 327 years ago, Quilombo dos Palmares was destroyed by Portuguese troops in one of the bloodiest chapters in Brazilian history. Located in Serra da Barriga, in União dos Palmares, Alagoas, northeastern Brazil, the site now houses the Quilombo dos Palmares Memorial Park, which reflects the political organization of Palmares society. On this date, practitioners of African-based religions and capoeiristas begin climbing the mountain in the early hours of the morning to honor the men and women who died fighting for freedom for Black people. Check out a special report by journalist Lenne Ferreira on the historical importance of Serra da Barriga and the legacy of struggles waged by leaders such as Acotirene, Aqualtune, and Zumbi.
