How do you bring a piece of Colombian design home in your carry-on? Del Portillo is a design studio in El Retiro, one of Bogotá's most upscale neighbourhoods. The brand is known for its furniture — but what catches the eye of a traveller is everything else: small wood sculptures, candleholders, bowls and carafes made from Colombian teak, Nogal Cafetero and Roble Flor Morado, and leather tote bags cut and assembled by hand. And then there's the bananero — a tabletop banana hanger that also exists as an award-winning aluminium sculpture.
