However, what began as a routine flight on March 16, 1969, ended in one of the most devastating tragedies in the history of Venezuelan aviation. After a failed takeoff from an unsuitable runway, the aircraft was unable to gain sufficient altitude, crashing into nearby urban areas and leaving 155 dead, including those on the ground. Among the victims were famous baseball players, such as Néstor “Látigo” Chávez, and prominent Venezuelan sports figures. What caused this disaster? A series of human errors, poor weather conditions, and technical problems doomed the flight before it even left the runway.
