This video demonstrates how to make a single standing seam by hand. The most common connection between thin sheet steel used in the manufacture of ducts and fittings for ventilation systems is the seam seam. A seam seam is a joint between two sheets of steel with folded edges pressed tightly together. Seam seams are categorized by their design as single, double, one-and-a-half (combined), and corner. They can also be standing or flat. By location, they are divided into longitudinal, located along the duct, and transverse, perpendicular to the duct axis or located at an angle to it. A single flat seam is the simplest joint used for a longitudinal closing seam in supply and exhaust ducts of general ventilation systems. This seam can also be used in the manufacture of various ventilation system components (air diffusers, hoods, etc.). In air ducts or components made of sheet steel thicker than 0.82 mm, connections are made only with single seams. Double standing seams are stronger and more watertight than single seams. They are often used for longitudinal seams in air ducts made of sheet steel up to 0.82 mm thick, which have higher requirements for seam density and strength. A single and a half (combined) seam is used instead of a double seam where it is difficult or impossible to create. A single and a half seam is almost as strong and watertight as a double seam. Single and double standing seams are used in combination with lock seams for transverse connections of round and rectangular air duct sections, elbows, and other components where maximum rigidity is required. Single corner folds and combined corner folds (American folds, Pittsburgh folds) are used in the manufacture of rectangular products, such as air ducts and rectangular fittings. The width of the fold depends on the thickness of the sheet steel and the intended purpose of the seam. For longitudinal folds made from 0.5 mm thick sheet steel, the fold width used is 6–8 mm; for 0.7–0.8 mm thick steel, the fold width is 8–10 mm; and for 1 mm thick steel, the fold width is 10–12 mm.
