The Regent S from La Strada is an established motorhome based on a Mercedes Sprinter. Combined with all-wheel drive, does it make for an exciting long-distance travel vehicle? They also offer plenty of living space at affordable prices – after all, they roll off the production line in the thousands and don't come with a custom-built living cabin. The market is correspondingly diverse, dominated by the motorhome base par excellence: the Fiat Ducato. If, however, you're looking for a chassis with all-wheel drive, the selection becomes quite limited – and, surprisingly, what you're left with is mainly vehicles with a star on the hood. This is also the case with La Strada, known in the motorhome sector for its robust conversions. Nowadays, almost one in ten Sprinter vans leaves the factory with four-wheel drive, either as a large "Nova" or the compact "Regent S 4×4." One of the first vehicles in the new model series, with a Euro 6 diesel engine and selectable all-wheel drive, is available for testing. "We like to describe our all-wheel drive vans as 'all-road vehicles,'" explains La Strada Managing Director Marco Lange at the handover. This is probably also to avoid excessive expectations of the van chassis. Based on sales figures, it is primarily designed for use within Europe. It features an AdBlue tank for exhaust aftertreatment, a sleek, comfortable chassis, and—in this case—a five-speed automatic transmission behind the 160 hp 2.2-liter turbodiesel. The neat-looking BF Goodrich AT tires signal the desire for off-road driving; instead of differential locks, the electronic traction system "4ETS" controls slippage. It's all the more surprising how confidently the Regent S 4×4 finds its way along loose forest paths a few hours later.
