Der Preis der Abhängigkeit: Wie Karmann verschwand

Karmann was once one of the most important names in German automotive history. In Osnabrück, some of the most beautiful vehicles Volkswagen ever offered were created: the Beetle Cabriolet, the Karmann Ghia, the Scirocco, and the Golf Cabriolet. But Karmann was never an ordinary car manufacturer. The company rarely built cars under its own name. It gave other brands' vehicles their shape, character, and elegance. This was precisely its greatest strength—and later, its greatest weakness. Karmann was dependent on orders from major manufacturers like Volkswagen, Mercedes, Audi, and Chrysler. As the automotive industry changed, convertibles and coupes became less popular, and the major corporations increasingly wanted to produce more themselves, Karmann gradually lost its footing. In 2009, it went bankrupt. Volkswagen took over the Osnabrück plant. The factory remained, but the Karmann name disappeared. Today, the former Karmann plant once again faces an uncertain future. A place where elegant convertibles were once built could now become a site for military vehicle components. This documentary tells the story of Karmann: from a small workshop to a convertible legend, from success to dependence, from Volkswagen to insolvency – and the question of what truly remains of this German automotive icon.
