Why Nimitz Flew Into Guadalcanal When His Own Commander Never Would | Pacific War

In late September 1942, the most powerful American in the Pacific did something no one at his level was supposed to do. Admiral Chester Nimitz climbed aboard a B-17 and flew into Guadalcanal — an island shelled almost every night, contested in the air and at sea, and not yet won. A thousand miles to the south, the officer who actually commanded the operation had never once set foot on it. He ran the fight from a ship in a quiet harbor, from the reports on his desk. Nimitz did not trust the reports. He went to see the truth for himself. He walked the ridge where the line had nearly broken. He stood with the Marines who held it. And what he learned in those few hours changed the command of the entire Pacific war. This is the story of the day one admiral risked everything to stand on the ground his own dispatches could not describe. If your father or grandfather served in the Pacific, share his name and unit below. Their stories deserve to be remembered. #WWII #Guadalcanal #Nimitz #PacificWar #USNavy #WorldWarII #USMC #MilitaryHistory This video uses archival materials and original terminology from the World War II era for historical research and educational purposes only.
