St Patrick's Picnic Group Shotts THE TRIP PROMO 1

In 1926 some parishioner’s of St Patrick's Shotts created a day out for the children of the Parish which over the years has come to be known quite simply and affectionately as "The Trip!" 1926 was a time of hardship for many in our community and a plan was hatched to give the children a day out that would take them away from the daily grind and struggles of the moment and let them have clean air, relaxation and most of all fun with their friends, Back then this was a great undertaking and required the dedication to succeed by so many in the parish. This dedication grew and with it so did ambition. From what many now would call humble beginnings The Trip has grown so that it requires the chartering of private trains to take everyone to a Scottish seaside town for the day, The closure of roads, booking of public places and conveniences, the authorisation for children’s parades, The sourcing & providing of hot food, snacks & goodies, Sports & games, First Aid cover, Indoor space in case of wet weather, the request to accompany us to St Patrick’s Band Shotts, and the help and support of many, many volunteers! This presentation is the first in a series to firstly thank those who had the vision to create such an event, successfully nurture and grow it and then also to thank everyone past and present who have given their time, skills and dedication to grow, fund and make sure that this tradition still continues to this day. To the Men, Women and Children of St Patrick’s Shotts as well as the wider community of Shotts who have supported and contributed to our “Trip” THANtK YOU! The Trip holds a special place in the hearts of everyone who has attended one. If you have children at the primary school or those up to third year at high school then please watch this and our other presentations to see just how fantastic an experience this can be. For some, this is, the most wonderful day of the year! The Trip still exists today due to the support of our local community but in particular to those who are members of our sweep and who contribute funds all year round which also help supply a gift to all the children of St Patrick’s Shotts at Christmas time.
