Do you know how it's diagnosed and treated? That's what we'll be talking about in today's video: what congenital clubfoot is, its diagnosis, and treatment. What is Congenital Clubfoot? Congenital Clubfoot (or CTF) is a condition in which a child is born with one or both feet turned inward. This malformation is an alteration in the ligaments, muscles, tendons, and bones of the foot that usually appears more frequently in boys. It's important to know that Congenital Clubfoot is curable, provided that treatment is carried out according to the evaluation of an orthopedic doctor. And what is the origin of Congenital Clubfoot? It is believed that this malformation occurs during gestation due to genetic and environmental influences. Diagnosis can be made via ultrasound during pregnancy, but is only confirmed at birth through evaluation of the foot's shape and flexibility. This evaluation prevents confusion between congenital clubfoot and postural clubfoot, which corrects itself naturally. Why is treatment for congenital clubfoot so important? Regardless of the specific type, treatment for congenital clubfoot should never be delayed or disregarded, as the persistence of this malformation can lead to difficulties throughout the baby's life, potentially preventing normal activities such as wearing regular shoes, hindering the child's gait development, and participating in active sports, among others. Remember that only a diagnosis made by an orthopedic doctor is ideal for a complete analysis and appropriate treatment. And what are the appropriate treatments for congenital clubfoot? Usually, a correction is performed, without the need for surgery. This correction can be performed using the Ponseti method, which consists of manipulation and immobilization with plaster casts to correct congenital clubfoot deformities. Initially, weekly cast changes are usually performed, and on average, 5 or 6 cast changes are necessary.
