A Day Railfanning Northern Colorado

On November 12, 2013, we set out to railfan some things in northern Colorado, including the Great Western Railway, the Union Pacific Ft. Collins Branch, and BNSF's Front Range Subdivision. It starts in Johnstown, where GW 01 is switching some cars. Then the train heads up the hill out of town towards small industries known as Bunyan and Walker. After that we headed north and somehow were able to catch the UP Ft. Collins Local before it reached the GW crossing at Kelim. At Kelim, we ran into the "Transfer Job," which transfers cars as needed throughout the line. This was led by two Canadian-built SD40s, one a former Alsthom and one a former KCS. We chased it back into Johnstown and they set off cars for the UP in Milliken. After that we headed for Fort Collins to catch up with the UP local on the Boettcher Branch. We were able to get it several times on the 10 mph branch before having to take one member of the gang home. We dropped him off and heard a southbound coming on the Front Range Sub, so we got it in the south end of Loveland as it starts its climb up the 1.7% Derby Hill.
