Many joined us for an engaging event with Guy Newland, Ph.D., scholar of Tibetan Buddhism and professor at Central Michigan University since 1988. He has authored, translated, and edited a number of publications on Tibetan Buddhism. In this two-day series, Dr. Guy Newland gave a presentation of emptiness based on Tsongkhapa's Great Treatise, thereby explaining what is distinctive about Tsongkhapa's ideas. Dr. Newland went on to explain how this leads to the Gelukpa presentation of the two truths. About Guy Newland Dr. Guy Newland is Professor of Religion and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Central Michigan University where he has taught since 1988. He holds a Ph.D. in the history of religions from the University of Virginia, where he studied Tibetan Buddhism with Jeffrey Hopkins. Guy has also studied with many Tibetan scholars in the U.S. and India. He is an editor of the three-volume translation Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment and Changing Minds, and the author of four other books: "Introduction to Emptiness", "The Two Truths: Appearance and Reality", and "A Buddhist Grief Observed." "The Life and Legacy of Lama Tsongkhapa" Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa (1357- 1419) was one of the greatest figures in the history of Tibetan Buddhism and the founder of the Gelug tradition. The year 2019 marked the 600th anniversary of Lama Tsongkhapa's parinirvana. To celebrate this, Tse Chen Ling offered a 14-month long series of programs that celebrated the life and lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa.
