The International Criminal Court and State Sovereignty (Emanuela Koskimies)

This video explains the way I address the relationship between the International Criminal Court (ICC) and state sovereignty in my own research work. I depart from my central research question: what is the regime of state sovereignty unfolded by the Court, and to what extent does it amount to a post-modern/"post-Westphalian" form of configuring political space? I briefly address the existing body of literature and introduce the theoretical framework in which my analysis is located, i.e. the English School theory. Thereafter, I describe the objectives of my research, which intends to answer the above question by means of tracing the conditions under which the ICC breaks into state sovereignty, both in theory (i.e. according to the provisions of the Statute) and in practice (i.e. as resulting from the prosecutorial policies of the Court). Finally, I conclude that the preliminary findings of my research seemingly pave the way to a 'nuanced' set of answers, rather than to any clear-cut conclusion.
