Do You REALLY Need to Speak the Language to Live Abroad?

One of the most common questions aspiring expats ask is: *"Do I need to learn the language before I move abroad?"* After living in Mexico, Ecuador, and Bulgaria—and recently spending time scouting locations in France—I've discovered there isn't a simple yes-or-no answer. In this video, I share how my approach to language learning has changed from country to country, why the answer depends on your goals, your personality, and your environment, and how translation apps fit into the equation (spoiler: they're helpful, but they aren't magic). We'll discuss: How much language you actually need to function comfortably The tradeoffs of relying on English or translation tools How language affects independence, friendships, and everyday life Why my goals in Ecuador were very different from my goals in Bulgaria What I'm thinking about if we eventually move to France Whether you're planning to retire abroad, become an expat, or are simply curious about life in another country, I hope this helps you think about language in a more practical—and less intimidating—way. I'd love to hear from you: *If you've lived abroad, how much of the local language did you learn? Did you wish you'd learned more—or less?* Chapters 00:00 This week's topic 03:49 Define your personal need to speak the language 05:11 What is your cost for language proficiency? 08:05 Consider the English-friendliness of your environment 10:44 What are the social expectations? 12:16 How good are you at learning languages? 13:24 My experience in several countries 17:51 Using Google Translate 20:23 Summary All donations to my Buy Me a Coffee page go fully support the Street Cats of Bansko project: buymeacoffee.com/expatjourneyonline #ExpatLife #LivingAbroad #MoveAbroad #RetireAbroad #LanguageLearning #AmericanExpat
