ÖVP-Ministerin Claudia Bauer: „Wir sollten die Schulden, die wir haben, zurückzahlen“

Claudia Bauer is one of Austria's most influential politicians. Since March 2025, she has served as Minister for Europe, Integration, and Family in the Stocker government for the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). At 22, she was once the youngest member of the National Council, and since 2021, she has led the Young ÖVP. In Berlin, the Merz government is struggling to implement reforms, while in Brussels, negotiations are underway on an EU budget of almost two trillion euros. Bauer is clearly opposed to ever-increasing joint debt: "We should pay back the debts we already have." She considers the title "Next Generation EU" to be a shifting of responsibility onto future generations. Ralf Schuler speaks with Bauer about Germany's economic weakness and its implications for neighboring countries, the reduction of EU reporting requirements, and the controversial pay transparency directive. Bauer defends the Austrian headscarf ban for girls under 14, which is now in effect and is currently being challenged before the Constitutional Court.
