Sergei Arefyev was kidnapped by the Russian military in March 2022 after a pro-Ukrainian rally in occupied Kherson. Since then, his family has been living in anticipation of news. We came to visit his wife Polina. We met their son, whom she is currently raising alone. The boy has autism, and it is a daily, very difficult job for a mother — to support, care for, and maintain stability in the child’s life while his father is in captivity. Serhiy learned about his son’s diagnosis after the kidnapping — from a letter from Polina. Together with Polina, we also visited an event in support of civilian prisoners. She goes there every week. This is a place where families gather to talk about their loved ones and not let these stories disappear from the public space.
