It broadcast its first news bulletin on the same day, coinciding with the publication of the first issue of the newspaper "Al-Shaab" in its Arabic and French editions. On April 4, 1990, the agency was restructured under its current name (Mauritanian News Agency - Agence Mauritanienne d’information) after merging with the National Press Company and incorporating the daily newspapers Al-Shaab and Horizon into it. It became a public institution of an administrative nature, enjoying financial autonomy and under the supervision of the Ministry of Communication. It was entrusted with several tasks, primarily collecting and distributing national news, contributing to the dissemination of national culture and information about the country's history, and publishing news through dispatches, news reports, and press kits. Today, the agency performs the traditional functions of news agencies through: A news ticker in Arabic, French, and English that covers all national events—political, economic, cultural, and social—and is considered the primary and reliable source of news for Mauritania. A website with three interfaces (Arabic, French, and English) containing an archive and general information about Mauritania (history, geography, constitutional institutions, economic resources, investment opportunities, etc.). Breaking news dissemination via its digital platforms on social media and SMS, in addition to reports, investigations, opinions, and features in the daily newspapers "Al-Shaab" and "Horizon," and the monthly magazines "Al-Shaab" and "Horizon." The Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) relies on its central editorial team and its editors stationed in ministries, public bodies, and institutions to accomplish these tasks, as well as its regional offices located in the state capitals and its correspondents in other cities. In addition to these tasks, the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) publishes the newspapers "Al-Shaab" and "Horizon," the oldest and most important daily newspapers in the country. It also launched the specialized monthly magazines "Al-Shaab" and "Horizon" on August 1, 2020. The Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) enjoys cooperative and partnership relations with major international news agencies, receiving broadcasts from most of them and serving as the distributor of their services within Mauritania. The agency is also an active member of regional and continental professional associations.
