Join us live at Ted HQ, RAF Coningsby, where Eurofighter Typhoons (and hopefylly BBMF aircraft) will depart and meet up in formation with other aircraft for the King's Birthday, Trooping the Colour. It is a military ceremony that has been held to mark the official birthday of the British Sovereign for more than 260 years. Over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together each June in a great display of military precision, horsemanship and fanfare to mark the Sovereign's official birthday. The streets are lined with crowds waving flags as the parade moves from Buckingham Palace and down The Mall to Horse Guard's Parade, alongside Members of the Royal Family on horseback and in carriages. The display closes with an RAF fly-past, watched by Members of the Royal Family from Buckingham Palace balcony. Once the Sovereign has arrived at Horse Guard's Parade in Whitehall, they are greeted by a Royal salute and carry out an inspection of the troops, who are fully trained and operational soldiers wearing the ceremonial uniform of red tunics and bearskin hats. After the military bands have performed, the escorted Regimental Colour, or flag, is processed down the ranks of soldiers. Over one hundred words of command are used by the Officer in Command of the Parade to direct the several hundred soldiers. Once the Foot Guards have marched past the Sovereign, they ride back to Buckingham Palace at the head of the soldiers, before taking the salute again at the Palace from a dais. The Sovereign is then joined by other Members of the Royal Family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. A 41-gun salute is also fired in Green Park to mark the occasion. What’s with the three X’s? Since the late 1920s, 29 Squadron were flying Siskins which featured XXX on the fuselage. Then when flying the Bulldog, there were on two X’s. I have sourced a picture of a Hawker Demon K3976 from 1935 featuring just two X’s In the 1950’s when operating the Meteor, they reverted back to three X’s. So the traditional story is this; the markings should really be XXIX to resemble 29 in roman numerals, but there is a belief among current squadron personnel that this originated as a "misspelling" of the Roman numeral. It is believed that a misunderstanding of instructions to ground crew to paint "2 X's in front of the roundel and IX behind it" meaning "X,X,(roundel), and 'IX'. Instead, it was misunderstood to put 'one' X after the roundel. It has stayed ever since. But since discovering the Bulldog and the Demon having just the two X’s, I personally believe they are NOT roman numerals at all. Squadron markings are a mixture of shapes and colours. 2 AC Squadron has two white triangles, 17 squadron have wavy lines and so too does 6 squadron.
