The SIOUX Were Never What We Thought — DNA Finally Revealed The Truth

The Sioux are the most iconic Native American nation in the world — Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Ghost Dance, Wounded Knee. For centuries, they defined the image of the Plains Indian — mounted warriors hunting buffalo across an endless grassland from the Dakotas to Montana. But the Sioux weren't always Plains people. They weren't even supposed to be there. DNA and oral tradition tell the same story — the Sioux came from somewhere else entirely, and the journey that made them who they are was far more recent and far more violent than most people realize. The Sioux Nation — Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota — speak dialects of the Siouan language family, which linguistic analysis traces back to the Ohio River Valley and the Great Lakes region. Before the 1700s, the Sioux lived in the woodlands of present-day Minnesota and Wisconsin — building canoes, harvesting wild rice, and living in bark lodges. They weren't nomads. They weren't horsemen. They had never seen a buffalo herd from horseback. The transformation happened in barely two generations. Pressure from the Ojibwe — who had acquired European firearms through the French fur trade — pushed the Sioux westward onto the open plains. There they encountered the horse, which had spread north from Spanish colonies in the Southwest. Within decades, a woodland people became the most formidable mounted warrior culture on the continent. The entire identity the world associates with the Sioux — the teepee, the war bonnet, the buffalo hunt on horseback — was less than 200 years old by the time Custer rode into the Little Bighorn. DNA confirms the deep antiquity beneath the recent transformation. The Sioux carry mitochondrial haplogroups A, B, C, and D — the four founding maternal lineages shared by virtually all Native American populations, tracing back to a small founding group that crossed Beringia from northeast Siberia roughly 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. That original founding population may have numbered as few as 250 individuals. A 2021 study using ancient DNA from Sitting Bull's own hair — extracted from a lock preserved since 1890 — confirmed his direct genealogical connection to a living great-grandson, making it the first time a familial relationship between a historical and contemporary Native American individual was proven through ancient DNA across such distant relatives. The Lakota carried their ancestors' DNA from Siberia across the Bering land bridge, through the woodlands, and onto the plains — adapting their culture completely while their genetics barely changed. The Sioux weren't born on the Great Plains. They were forged there — in less time than the United States has existed. 🔔 Subscribe for more stories where DNA rewrites everything. 📚 SOURCES: • Seguin-Orlando, A. et al. — "Identifying a Living Great-Grandson of the Lakota Sioux Leader Sitting Bull," Science Advances (2021) • Raghavan, M. et al. — "Genomic Evidence for the Pleistocene and Recent Population History of Native Americans," Science (2015) • Moreno-Mayar, J.V. et al. — "Early Human Dispersals Within the Americas," Science (2018) • Castro e Silva, M.A. et al. — "A Vast Indigenous American Genome Map Exposes Lost Migrations and Ancient Ancestry," Nature (2026) • Crawford, M.H. et al. — "DNA Sequences Suggest 250 People Made Up Original Native American Founding Population," University of Kansas (2018) • DeMallie, R.J. — "Handbook of North American Indians: Plains," Smithsonian Institution (2001) • Gibbon, G.E. — "The Sioux: The Dakota and Lakota Nations," Blackwell Publishing (2003) • White, R. — "The Winning of the West: The Expansion of the Western Sioux in the 18th and 19th Centuries," Journal of American History (1978) #Sioux #Lakota #Dakota #DNA #NativeAmerican #Genetics #SittingBull #GreatPlains #Indigenous #ForgottenHistory
