A new chapter in the history of Catholicism has been written at the St. James’s Church in Gurunagar, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. For the first time in Sri Lanka, a grand flagpole designed entirely in Indian architectural and cultural traditions was erected in a Catholic church and the flag hoisting ceremony was held there. ​This historic event serves as a bridge connecting Catholic spirituality and the cultural background of the Indo-Sri Lankan Tamils. Different from the flagpoles usually found in Catholic churches, this flagpole has five levels of kalasas. These kalasas are considered to represent spiritual heights and the grace of God. ​Each part of the kalasa flagpole is designed with very delicate sculptural works. From the base of the pole to the kalasas, paintings and sculptures reflecting various elements of Indian culture have been carved. This institution reflects the deep devotion of the people of Gurunagar and their concern for preserving their cultural identity. ​On the day of the flag hoisting ceremony, the Gurunagar St. James Church itself was in a festive mood. The event, attended by thousands of devotees, featured special prayers and traditional cultural performances.
