There are also technical difficulties. For example, the Powershift transmission—a preselective "robot" that replaced the standard automatic—is quite problematic. There are eight software versions available for the combination of the Powershift and the 1/6 engine, and none are perfect. The external control unit for the "robot" turned out to be weak not only in software but also in soldering. Defective ECUs were shipped to assembly lines around the world until 2013. Ford acknowledged the error, but not all units were replaced. It's worth clarifying whether they were replaced. Are the robots smart? On the one hand, Getrag, which manufactured this unit, acted wisely: the drives are reliable, purely electric, not hydraulic. But they skimped on the inexpensive input shaft seals. As a result, the seals began to leak on almost new cars, and oil would get onto the dry clutch discs. They would slip or become so saturated with the oily slurry that the friction linings swelled, causing the discs to become dislodged from the clutch basket. And if the grease got onto the forks, it would attract dirt and sand like a magnet, and all this gunk would accumulate under the fork boots. As a result, the forks stopped moving properly, and the electric motor couldn't move the fork through this clot of oil and dirt. Thus, on pre-facelift Focuses, the transmissions themselves were killing themselves after 30-40,000 km. Then new firmware appeared, Getrag changed the ECU and seal suppliers, and the release bearing and forks were redesigned. After several iterations, the "robot" was finally perfected, but we still don't recommend it. Getrag also made a "wet preselector," and it's quite good by contrast, but it was only installed on diesel engines. So, there's no decent automatic? Yes. A regular automatic is available with the 1.5-liter turbocharged Ecoboost. It's a good, long-lasting six-speed that thrives on two things: warming up (at least briefly) and clean oil. So, it's best to change the oil every 45,000 km. And is the manual transmission reliable? Not so much. This manual transmission has been well-known since the second Focus. The transmission's seals are weak, so it can eventually run out of oil. The five-speed manual transmission, which is standard on the lower-end engines, often makes noise with the input shaft bearing. It usually needs to be replaced after 100,000-120,000 km. Which engine is better? There are almost no diesel or gasoline turbocharged engines on the market—more than 80% of cars for sale have the naturally aspirated "1-six" engine, which the third Focus inherited from the second. The displacement is the same, but the power output varies: 86, 105, 120, and 125 hp. Ford has been producing this engine for so long that, in theory, there shouldn't be a trace of its teething problems. Unfortunately, new ones have joined the old ones. The first few production runs of the third Focus not only had trouble starting, but also instantly became coated with carbon deposits. It turned out that, while upgrading the ancient engine to meet the latest emission standards, the IT guys had written some seriously flawed firmware... A proper one appeared around 2011. Are Russian-assembled engines any worse? In September 2015, the engines received Russian registration, and six months later, they began to be installed in Focus cars. Crankshafts, blocks, and cylinder heads were cast from our raw materials. Furthermore, the main bearing caps, spark plugs, and even pistons proudly bore the "Made in Russia" stamp. Our engines are no worse than British ones. Besides the 1.6, you can also find a naturally aspirated two-liter engine—that's about 15-20 percent of all ads. It's worth considering before buying—they've slapped direct injection on a good engine, ruining everything. Furthermore, the good, quiet "four" became wild and erratic after the introduction of direct injection. Vibrations quickly destroy the engine mounts. There's a theory that the jerking is caused by a leaky fuel injection pump. Is the suspension durable? Complaints about a crunching sound when turning the steering wheel are attributed to the strut support bearings. They started making the noise after just 10,000-15,000 kilometers. In 2014, Ford released a unit with improved protection against moisture and dirt. The steering rack was also treated for knocking, but time has shown that it wasn't completely cured.
