King Basin Road - VHC (Mt Buller region)

This video profiles King Basin Road which runs between Speculation Road and Circuit Road, and is located approximately 4km north of Mt Stirling. The reason for profiling King Basin Road is that the lower section of the road is a 4wd track that includes four crossings of the King River. The lower section of the road follows the course of the King River in a downstream direction to Pineapple Flat. There are four crossings of the King River, most are quite rocky and bumpy, and can be tricky to cross with elevated flows. I recommend having a snorkel on your 4wd if planning to drive these crossings. The lower section of King Basin Road also features King River Hut which is worth a visit. There’s a stack of awesome campsites along King Basin Road that can be accessed via the river crossings or from the Circuit Road end (if you wish to avoid the crossings). From the Pineapple Flat turnoff (Burnt Top Track), the road snakes its way up to the Circuit Road and is an easy drive. Overall road conditions are excellent and the only obstacles to note are the river crossings (plus a minor tributary). It takes approximately 1hr to drive King Basin Road, and it’s a great route to consider if you are visiting Craigs Hut and are looking to take on something more interesting. I rate King Basin Road as easy but watch out for elevated flow conditions within the King River. Catch you out there! Track filmed Nov 2025.
