On January 21st, 2026, I visited Toji Temple in Kyoto for the very first "Kobo-san" market of the year, known as "Hatsu-Kobo." Toji Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and on the 21st of every month, its grounds transform into a massive open-air market with over 1,000 stalls. You can find everything here: time-honored antiques, vintage kimono, handmade crafts, and delicious local street food. In this video, I’ll take you through the bustling crowds to find some hidden gems. Highlights include: The famous "Suguki" (traditional fermented pickles) from Kamigamo—look at that long queue! Heartwarming interactions with local shopkeepers (and some great deals on "Chirimen" dried sardines!). A stroll through the enchanting antique zone near the iconic Five-Story Pagoda.
