When he ascended the throne, he was very young and lacked the skills to govern. This was largely compensated for by the presence of experienced administrators in his entourage – and later, his father, Feodor Nikitich Romanov, aka Patriarch Filaret, who had returned from Polish captivity, became the young tsar's main "mentor." How many signatures were on the final "verdict" regarding the election of a new sovereign? What was the decisive factor in the candidacy of the young Mikhail Romanov being preferred over many noble and much more experienced statesmen? What happened to the tsar's first wife?
