Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2025: First batch crosses Nathula border

The first batch of 36 pilgrims undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the Nathula Pass in Sikkim crossed into the Tibetan Autonomous Region. The group, comprising men and women aged between 21 and 70, was escorted by two Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel acting as liaison officers. The yatra was ceremonially flagged off at the Nathula border by Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur. He was accompanied by Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa, along with other state ministers and legislators, who extended their wishes to the pilgrims for a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey. This batch of pilgrims will spend approximately 11 days in Tibet, where they will undertake the sacred parikrama (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash and visit the holy Mansarovar Lake. Upon crossing the Indian border, they were received by officials and army personnel of the People’s Republic of China. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nathula, one of the two official routes approved by the Indian government (the other being via Lipulekh in Uttarakhand), was launched in 2015 as an alternative, more accessible route, particularly for elderly pilgrims. The Sikkim route, though longer in duration, is motorable up to a large extent, reducing physical strain. The entire pilgrimage from Sikkim typically takes around 21 days, including acclimatization and travel time on both sides of the border. Organized annually by the Ministry of External Affairs, the yatra is considered one of the most challenging and revered pilgrimages undertaken by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers alike.
