GPS Tip/Hack: How To View Caltopo Map Layers on Garmin GPS Devices

How to export your favorite caltopo map layers to view and use on your Garmin GPS. This easy method allows you to navigate in the field using the same map layers you use at home in caltopo to plan your hike. This caltopo map layer tutorial shows how easy it is to export your favorite caltopo map layers to your GPS. Garmin 24k topo maps are limited in features, detail and in fact, look quite outdated at times. Caltopo has more detailed map layers such as the scanned 7.5 maps (USGS topo maps), the MapBuilder layer, US Forest Service map layers, OpenStreet, OpenCycle, Marine Charts, TF Outdoors, terrain shading, slope angle shading, aerial imagery and more layers. All of these layers can be exported to your GPS unit for addition map options/detail/info while navigating the backcountry. I tested this with a garmin 66i and garmin oregon 450 GPS units, and works on both. The older units may not be able to fit as many map tiles as the newer units, but as long as you don't ahve a basic GPS unit (etrex, for example) you should be able to load the caltopo map layers onto your GPS using the print KMZ option.
