Stave Drum 7 - Bearing Edge Discussion

Happy New Year everyone! In this episode of the Stave Drum Build Series, we take the shell to the next critical stage: final sanding and preparation for finish. With both the inside and outside surfaces smoothed and refined, the shell is now structurally complete and ready for edge work. We also take time to dive deep into two of the most important—and often misunderstood—elements of snare drum performance: bearing edges and snare beds. We discuss what they do, why they matter, and how subtle differences can dramatically affect tuning, response, and overall feel. This is a theory-meets-practice conversation that applies not only to stave drums, but to drum building in general. If you’ve ever wondered why certain drums tune more easily, speak more clearly, or respond better at low tensions, this episode will help connect the dots. In the next episode, we’ll move into precision work: flattening the shell edges and cutting the bearing edges, setting the foundation for final assembly and sound. This series documents the complete process of building a custom stave snare drum from raw lumber to finished instrument—sharing lessons learned, practical techniques, and honest observations along the way. ⸻ ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Intro 00:16 MAW Action Weather 00:33 What's Up Today? 01:54 Glue Fill 03:20 Sanding Plan 06:57 Sanding Lessons 11:10 Finish Ready 12:36 Bearing Edge Discussion 24:25 Snare Beds 27:17 Summary 28:34 Outro ⸻ 🔧 Next Up in the Series We flatten the shell’s edges, then cut in the bearing edges.
