As the friction grew, its attitude control thrusters fired furiously, fighting the atmospheric drag to keep its high-gain antenna pointed strictly at Earth, transmitting data until its structural integrity failed. At 06:55 UTC, its signal flattened into static. Because of the 1.5-billion-kilometer distance, the signal took 83 minutes to reach Earth; when NASA scientists wept at the flatline at 06:55, Cassini had already vaporized into a shooting star 83 minutes prior.
