The Walker Family of Placerita Canyon
A quiet ranch in Placerita Canyon holds a crucial chapter in California’s gold history. In this episode, historian Philip Scorza and George Starbuck explore the Walker homestead and the story behind the effort to firmly establish the site of California’s first documented gold discovery. In 1842, Francisco Lopez discovered gold in Placerita Canyon while California was still part of Mexico — six years before the famous strike at Sutter’s Mill. But by the early 20th century, uncertainty and competing accounts threatened to blur the exact location of the discovery. In 1930, a group of local historians and residents set out to settle the question. Their effort centered on the ranch of Frank Walker, whose property in Placerita Canyon had long been associated with the discovery site. Historians including Arthur B. Perkins and Adolfo G. Rivera of the Native Sons of the Golden West organized a ceremony there and erected a memorial marking the place where Lopez reportedly found gold in 1842. That effort helped firmly establish the Santa Clarita Valley as the site of California’s first documented gold discovery and ultimately led to the location’s official designation as California Historical Landmark No. 168 in 1935. Walking the property decades later, Scorza and Starbuck point out remnants of the Walker homestead and traces of earlier activity in the canyon — old wells, water tanks, and other relics that hint at the area's long human history. Walker family members Tom Walker and Melba (Walker) Fisher also appear in the program, sharing firsthand memories of life at the ranch and stories passed down through the family, including a colorful local tale involving the outlaw Tiburcio Vasquez. Their recollections add a personal dimension to the landscape and the history surrounding California's first gold discovery. Today Placerita Canyon State Park preserves this landscape in the Santa Clarita Valley, where the 1842 discovery sparked California’s first gold rush during the Mexican era and helped set the stage for the later Gold Rush that transformed the state. This program captures both the physical setting of that history and the earlier generation of historians who worked to ensure that California’s first gold discovery in Placerita Canyon would not be forgotten.
