The Pope said, "Your family, community, and faith are a great source of strength for this country. You too are members of this nation. Justice aims to protect society. But, to be effective, it must always promote the dignity and worth of every human being. True justice, rather than punishing, seeks to help rebuild the lives of victims, perpetrators, and communities wounded by evil. There can be no justice without reconciliation. This is a huge task. Part of it can happen inside prisons, but the greater part must involve communities across the country, to prevent and heal the wounds caused by injustice."
