Meccano Martian Mission: The mechanical Atari Lunar Lander arcade game!
Model built by Pete Wood, based on the pioneering computer arcade game called "Lunar Lander" originally released by Atari in 1979. It is a two-dimensional flight simulator featuring a lunar landing craft descending towards a rugged mountainous terrain with various safe landing zones scattered around. The idea is to control the craft's descent using thrust and orientation, and attempt to land safely on any chosen landing pad. The Meccano version replicates most of the original features, including two levels of difficulty, a thrust flame, a countdown timer and a fuel gauge. Landing pads have score multipliers depending on their size and location. The original game zooms in for a close-up view as the ship gets closer to the ground. This feature was understandably beyond the scope of the Meccano version! 00:00 Introduction 00:52 Rotate and Thrust controls / Pete’s first mission (crashed) 02:06 Ted’s first mission (crashed) 03:39 Mission Mode control, Timer and Fuel Gauge / Pete’s second mission (crashed) 05:46 Resetting the game / Pete’s third mission (crashed) 08:22 Ted’s second mission (landed) 10:54 Background and development 11:43 Vertical drive 12:49 Horizontal drive 13:41 Attitude sensing and control 15:23 Crash and landing detection 16:45 Lander and pantograph assembly Subscribe to our YouTube channel to see models built by London's Meccano enthusiasts, plus occasional coverage of Meccano events elsewhere in the UK.
