Fires are ravaging Spain at such an accelerated pace that it's almost impossible to keep up with their progress. There are nearly twenty active outbreaks, mainly in Castile and León, but also in Galicia, Madrid, Cádiz, Toledo, and Cáceres. By this point in August, some 60,000 hectares have already burned, the same as in all of 2024—although we're still far from record-breaking years like 2022 or 2012. In Galicia, Ourense is bearing the brunt of this wave of fires. The entire province is under emergency level two, and more than 10,000 hectares have already burned in recent days. Extremadura is also under alert level two, and the UME (Mechanical Emergency Unit) is already working on the ground. Meanwhile, in Toledo, work continues to extinguish the Calera y Chozas fire.
