College tennis brings a variety of student athletes from many backgrounds & countries to further their education as well as their athletic talents. Once in a while, promising young players clash with future pro athletes without even knowing it! In 2009, the University of Hawaii Men's college tennis team ventured out to Southern Cali to take on the prestigious USC team. UH, ranked #78 in the nation (D1 school rankings), came into this match as the clear underdogs against a USC Trojan team ranked in the top 10 (#7 in the nation). That didn't scare off UH's #1, Dennis Lajola, on bit! The 89th individually ranked player in the nation went into this match with tons of playing experience: Notably a singles semi finalist at both the Kalamazoo & Easter Bowl junior event, a Rd of 16 finisher at the junior Australian Open, & ranked as high as #2 in the Junior ITF Circuit. Dennis was set for maybe the college match of his life as he took on USC's #1 & at the time #4 individually ranked division 1 college player Robert Farah. Robert, at the time, had his own resume to boast about as well: Notably a junior national champion in both the 12s & 14s divisions, held the #10 ranking in the world as a 14U junior & #3 in South America when playing for Columbia. After college, Robert would also go on to the pros, where he's won multiple grand slam titles in doubles & ranked as high as the #1 doubles player in the world! Both Dennis & Robert also had junior Davis cup experience before this match as well. Most people, at first glance, would see USC as the clear favorite to win #1 singles. However true tennis fans, on this day, knew that this match could be a fascinating one to strap in for!
