HAMNET || Keep Your Heart Open

"[...] And in this harsh world draw thy breath in pain, To tell my story. [...] - the rest is silence." ---- "A story that moves you"—that truly sums up this film. Hamnet moves you by taking the Shakespeare we know and transforming him into a human, a man far removed from the legend. It’s definitely not a biography, and perhaps that’s why we never even hear his name throughout the film, save for a single mention at the end. Yet, the myth he was already becoming echoes through the picture: fingers constantly stained with ink, meditative gazes that capture the exact moment inspiration strikes, and the weight of creative struggle. Not to mention the subtle hints at his future masterpieces, from Romeo and Juliet to Macbeth. But again, this is not a historical biopic of the "Great William Shakespeare." This is a story where the true protagonist is Agnes, his wife. Agnes (historically known as Anne) is the "child of a forest witch"—or at least, that is how the folk of her time (in the film) defined this woman who lives in pure harmony with the earth. She breathes and moves in unison with nature, healing wounds and seeing souls with a simple touch. It is a power that stems from a visceral, primal connection with the verdant pulse of the world. She lives her grief too as a physical reality. The pain of a mother remains etched in the very body that once held life—the memory of pregnancy, the echo of labor, the weight of a child no longer there. Her loss is as visceral as the earth she tends to. This is why I wanted to highlight the parallel between Agnes’s physical labour and Will’s creative agony. While Agnes carries the heavy, silent burden of a bereaved body, Will transforms his own grief into ink and ghosts. Two different ways of giving life, both born from pain and an overwhelming love. This brings us to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, which haunts the narrative like a prophecy. In the myth, looking back is a fatal mistake; in Hamnet, that "Look at me" becomes a moment of profound realization and release. When Will finally "looks back" during his play, Agnes is there, and so his personal life courses through his own role. The line between Hamlet's father and Hamnet's father blurs until it disappears. He really is that father-ghost who wasn't there during his son's death. The guilt, the pain, transcend into an acceptance of Hamnet as a presence—a soul existing in that liminal space between life and death. For Will, the "birth" of Hamlet is his way of bringing their son back. And for Agnes, stepping into the theatre for the first time is like entering a sanctuary she doesn't yet know how to navigate. She is overwhelmed, lost in a space that feels alien, until she lets herself be carried away by the story her husband created—a story written for their son, Hamnet. Hamlet becomes a story destined to move entire generations for centuries, so the whole world could mourn and remember Hamnet forever. ---- Thank you to whoever had the patience to read this: I wanted to actually express my thoughts on this movie somewhere, as it has had quite an impact on me ever since I saw it in the theatre. The actors were incredible and Zhao created such marvelous scenes. I've missed watching films that could open your heart like this... it's been so long since a 'new movie' has had this gentle, yet raw power to show how art can truly heal.
