From Studies to Real Paintings: How Practice Makes a Blueprint for Process

Limited Time: 30% Off ALL my classes until December 4th: https://marabethquinart.thinkific.com/ Use Code HOLIDAY30 From Studies to Real Paintings: How Practice Makes A Blueprint for Process I talk about doing studies a lot and it’s because they really do all the heavy lifting. You get to just be free and loose in studies and paint enough of them that something begins to organize. By the time you realize you’re ready to go onto a bigger surface or just upgrade into the territory of a ‘painting’ instead of a study, you do so because all of the work with the studies has given you a process, a concept, some cohesive structure that you may not even be able to put into words yet, but it’s there guiding you. It’s no longer a free-for-all like it was in the study stage—now you know in a general sense what you’re going for, and you’ve also figured out when to concentrate on what things. Why? Because your studies worked that out for you and gave you a blueprint. Things I’m thinking about at this beginning stage: Getting different colors represented with my very limited palette Lots of marks to work with Leaving good amounts of empty space Making marks that extend over the whole surface Making sure I include the components that I have located in all of the studies I’ve been doing Adding value contrast Things I’m NOT thinking about here: Making botanical shapes Composition (except to make sure that I have one main grouping of shapes that will be the focal point) What each individual painting will look like Tiny marks or specific gestures or details—I’m just generating material to work with within the framework that my studies have located for me Video Chapters: 0:00 Introduction to the concept that studies do the heavy lifting and prep work for the ‘real’ work, creating a blueprint for process 1:12 How I started my first ‘real’ paintings with this iteration of my botanicals 6:21 The things I’m NOT thinking about at this beginning stage 7:10 The things I AM thinking about at this beginning stage 8:48 A look at where they are, moving into the mid-stage To sign up for notifications about my YouTube Livestreams: https://marabethquinart.myflodesk.com...
