The Kochi Prefecture High School Athletic Meet, commonly known as the "Prefectural Games," featured approximately 4,800 participants from 43 schools across the prefecture in 29 sports and 30 events. Most events also served as qualifiers for the Shikoku Regional Championships and the Inter-High School Championships, resulting in fierce competition at various venues throughout the prefecture. On May 24th, at the GIKEN Stadium, the women's 100-meter track and field event took place. Yui Okabayashi, a second-year student at Kochi Agricultural High School, who set the then-Japanese record for elementary school girls' 100-meter races, competed. She and her older sister, Saki, were known as the "Okabayashi Sisters," a triumphant group in the track and field world. In the 2025 Prefectural Games, a sisterly showdown took place in the women's 100-meter final. Saki won the race in 11.92 seconds, just 0.03 seconds behind her sister, Yui. One year later, in 2026, she competed again in the women's 100-meter final. Yui Okabayashi, who dominated the race with an overwhelming acceleration from the start, won in 11.96 seconds, securing her place in the Shikoku regional championships. Yui Okabayashi, a second-year student at Kochi Agricultural High School: "I'm really happy with my time of 11 seconds, but I'm still worried about my start, so I want to properly review that and aim to surpass the prefectural record and beat my older sister's record at the Inter-High School Championships." Beyond the Shikoku Championships, she vowed to achieve a personal best of 11.72 seconds at the Inter-High School Championships, and even surpass her older sister Saki's prefectural record of 11.65 seconds. In addition to winning the women's 100 meters, Yui Okabayashi was also selected as a reinforced athlete for the 2025 Under-20 Olympic Games, and won the long jump as well. Although she has only been competing for about two years, Yui said it's a "fun sport that refreshes me," and she confidently stated her goal of winning at the Inter-High School Championships.
