Fixing up an MTD - Deck Installation & How-To

So we got this MTD riding lawn mower & it was in pretty rough shape... Model # 136Q695H352 Serial # 3F216C60017 It didn't have a battery, there was no key, the belts were worn & needed to be replaced. Our friend Freddy bought this for $275 without even hearing the engine run (Not recommended!). It needed a lot of work & upon 1st inspection we noticed that it didn't have the 18hp engine that it was supposed to have. Instead, it had a newer 14.5hp. We had to do some electrical work, getting the fuel solenoid wired up with 12v so we could run it was our 1st priority, then hooking up the off switch so we could shut it off (The key switch wouldn't turn off the machine). We stripped the mower deck down, painted it with some Tremclad black rust preventative paint, replaced the idler pulleys that were seized & replaced the main bearings on the stack pulley. After that, a quick carb clean & this thing ran great! A little bit of green paint & a new battery & this machine was ready to be returned to our customer! All in all, he spent about $800 total. ($275 for the MTD, about $250 in parts & about $300 for our labor.
