In a previous video, I explained that the cafe racer frame has had a lot of work done to it already. Things like a hoop welded to the frame rails at the back, and a number of brackets including the rear footrest hangers having been cut off. There were also a few brackets welded on, for the rear brake, seat and rear sets. I have decided to paint it myself with 2k gloss black to make it look presentable and address some of the surface rust which had started where modifications had been done in the past to make it a cafe racer. Some additional welding was required so young Spanner Rash kindly attended to that for me now he's had a bit of practice with his project car. He was also good enough to do most of the prep and painting this time, he mustn't trust me with it. To halt the surface rust it was all sanded back and coated with Upol etch primer. I find this quite effective at stopping rust from recurring. The final coats were a 2-pack RAL9005 gloss black, put on with 3 or 5 coats. Because we couldn’t find anywhere strong enough to hang it where we were painting it, we did the top surfaces of the frame first, adding additional coats underneath where it had stood on some supports. We painted on some of the hottest days of the year. This is a benefit and a problem. The benefit is that the paint cures quickly, and not having to dodge rain is a real bonus. On the downside there are more insects and dust in the air. We put up a gazebo marquee to shelter us and the job from the sun, and it worked out really well. The 2k black is very durable when it is fully cured. It isn’t as good as powder, but with a bit of care and attention, it should last a long time.
