BMW Z4 E89 How to Replace Rear Wheel Bearing

Here is the breakdown of the BMW E90/E91 rear wheel bearing compatibility and replacement procedure in English. For the E90 and E91 (as well as the E92 Coupe and E93 Convertible), the rear axle uses **two different bearing sizes**, depending on the engine size and drivetrain configuration (RWD vs. xDrive). While the replacement procedure and required tools are identical for all models, the parts themselves are split into "Small" and "Large" bearings and are not interchangeable. 1. The Small Bearing (Size: 42 x 75 x 37 mm) This bearing is used on the lighter, more common 4-cylinder and some entry-level 6-cylinder Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) models. *Compatible E90/E91 Models:* *Petrol:* 316i, 318i, 320i, 323i, 325i (RWD only). *Diesel:* 316d, 318d, 320d (RWD only). *Cross-Compatibility with other BMWs:* This exact bearing is shared with the 1-Series (**E81, E82, E87, E88**) for models like the 116i, 118i, 120i, 118d, 120d, as well as the **Z4 (E89)**. 2. The Large Bearing (Size: 45 x 85 x 41 mm) This is a heavy-duty, reinforced bearing designed to handle the higher torque of larger engines, the added stress of xDrive (AWD), and the higher load capacity of certain configurations. *Compatible E90/E91 Models:* *All xDrive Models:* 320xd, 325xi, 330xi, 335xi. *Large Engines (RWD & xDrive):* 325d, 330d, 335d, 330i, 335i, and the **M3**. *Cross-Compatibility with other BMWs:* This bearing is also found on high-performance 1-Series models (**E82/E88** – 135i, 1M), the **X1 (E84)**, and certain versions of the 5-Series (**E60**). Is the Replacement Procedure the Same? Yes, the replacement process is *100% identical* across all models built on the E90/E91/E87 platform. They all share the same multi-link rear suspension architecture. *Disassembly* Remove brake caliper, rotor, and free the axle. Remove the central axle nut (usually requires a 30mm or 36mm 12-point socket). Press the axle inward out of the wheel hub. If it is seized, use an axle pusher tool—never hit the axle directly with a hammer, as you will damage the CV joint.**Hub Removal** Use a slide hammer to pull the hub. Pull the wheel hub out of the bearing using a slide hammer. In 90% of cases, the inner bearing race will remain seized onto the hub. You will need to carefully cut it with an angle grinder or use a bearing splitter/puller to remove it.**Bearing Extraction** Remove the snap ring and extract the bearing. Remove the large retaining snap ring inside the knuckle. Using an on-car wheel bearing press kit (threaded rod and sub-frame cups), press the old bearing out towards the outside of the vehicle.**New Bearing Installation** Critical Step: ABS encoder ring orientation. Warning: The bearing has an integrated magnetic ABS/DSC encoder ring on one side (usually dark brown or black). This magnetic side MUST face INWARD (towards the differential) where the ABS sensor reads it. Press the new bearing in by applying force only to its outer race to avoid destroying the internal ball bearings.**Reassembly** Install snap ring, press the hub, and torque down. Install the new snap ring from the kit. Press the wheel hub back into the bearing. Crucial: You must support the inner race of the bearing from behind while pressing the hub in, otherwise, you will push the bearing apart.
