Do I have a broken knee?! My orthopedist said I have mild osteoarthritis, cartilage damage, or a meniscus tear. Panic sets in, and you don't know what to do next: Can I still exercise? Am I broken? → I can usually reassure my clients that knee pain rarely has anything to do with osteoarthritis or cartilage damage, even if a doctor has diagnosed them. A clear distinction must be made here between symptoms: cartilage damage, joint wear and tear and causes: poor movement patterns and tense muscles. One of the main suspects here is the sartorius muscle (German: Schneidermuskel). It is spindle-shaped and lies on the front of the thigh, and its tendon inserts on the inside of the knee. If the tension is too high, this tendon inserts into the knee and becomes inflamed, which is then perceived and communicated as "knee pain" or "problems with the medial collateral ligament." The solution is quite simple: We need to relax the sartorius muscle and eliminate the cause of this tension. The connection to the body's ipsilateral muscle chain is particularly interesting here. A "shortened" lateral abdominal muscle on the affected side (e.g., knee problem on the right) and a weakness of the opposite lateral abdominal muscle (left) are particularly relevant.
