Why is this little symbol, the schwa, so much talked about today? Because it is one of the many solutions to address two structural issues in Italian: how to address a mixed crowd and, more recently, how to address someone who doesn't identify as either masculine or feminine. Vera Gheno talks to us about linguistic experimentation and possible solutions to make Italian a more inclusive language. A sociolinguist specializing in digital communication and a translator from Hungarian, she collaborated with the Accademia della Crusca for twenty years. She currently works with the Zanichelli publishing house and teaches as an adjunct professor at the University of Florence.
