From evening onwards, Shijo Street and other areas become pedestrian zones, and the sounds of Gion Hayashi music fill the air as Komagata lanterns are lit. It is the most lively night, with stalls lining the streets, decorations for the floats being displayed, and chimaki (rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) being distributed.
