They can be done with vowels or closed mouth or even specific syllables of your choice. Giuseppe Concone (1801 - 1861 Turin) was an Italian singing teacher. For about ten years, Concone resided in Paris as a teacher. When he returned to Turin in 1848, he was, at the time of his death, organist and conductor of the Court choir. He is widely known for his vocal exercises - solfeggi and vocalizzi - which are extraordinarily attractive for works of this type and, at the same time, excellent for their special purpose. Thomasidis and MacPherson describe them as "living" works in the Italian tradition of that time. While in Paris, he wrote three 'oratorios'; a fellow named Smither said: "these are quite brief, they don't include an orchestra, but only piano accompaniment, and were evidently planned to be performed at a private party, not in a theatre. No performance of any of the three is known."
