The Flood Before the Bible: Gilgamesh and the Oldest Story

A man with no degree taught himself a dead language on his lunch breaks, and in 1872 he read a flood off a broken clay tablet older than the Bible. The same boat. The same dove. A thousand years too early. He had found the flood of Noah written down centuries before Genesis, in a language two thousand years dead, by a civilization that pressed its whole memory into river mud and baked it hard. This documentary follows that flood backward through the clay, from the broken tablet in a London museum down through three languages to the oldest version we can still reach, and then out of the texts and into the actual dirt, where an archaeologist once stood in a sixty-foot pit and announced he had found the deluge of the poems and the Bible both. The poem, a king-list that counts a quarter of a million years of god-kings, and a real layer of silt in the ground turn out to be three floods that do not line up, and how a people turned many drownings into one memory they could no longer locate is the actual mystery. A 57-minute documentary on where the flood story really comes from, told through the primary sources and the people who dug them up, for the viewer who wants the honest account rather than the aliens or the Sunday-school recap. No global deluge, no ancient astronauts, just clay you could still hold in your hand. Subscribe if you want the next one of these. And if you have a translation, a source, or a correction we should have used, leave it in the comments. We read them, and we go look. Featured in this documentary: George Smith, the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Sumerian King List, Utnapishtim and Ziusudra, the Atrahasis epic, Leonard Woolley, and the flood layers under Ur.
