[GERMANY] – Germany in a state of emergency: Extreme heat causes chaos – numerous brush and forest fires – many injured and dead – firefighters and rescue workers on major operations – severe storms rage, lightning strikes, trees uprooted by downbursts An exceptional heat wave has gripped Germany in recent days, triggering numerous major operations. Temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) have led to parched vegetation, forest fires, technical hazards, and medical emergencies. The change in weather was followed by severe thunderstorms, causing further damage in many areas. Brandenburg is particularly affected, where several forest fires are being fought simultaneously. Near Görzke and Dahlen, a fire continues to spread despite the massive firefighting effort. Farmers are supporting the firefighting efforts with heavy equipment. Previously, around 17 hectares (60 acres) of forest and eight hectares (80 acres) of field were ablaze near Gräben; numerous specialized emergency services prevented further spread. The situation also remains tense in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the area near Traisen, where unexploded ordnance is found, a forest fire got out of control and threatened the village. Repeatedly exploding unexploded ordnance made direct firefighting efforts impossible, and more than 650 residents had to be evacuated as a precaution. The extreme heat also led to further dangerous incidents. In Weingarten (Baden), an overheated propane tank had to be deliberately burned off after the fire department's attempts to cool it failed. Around 20 residents were evacuated. In Willstätt, following a fatal train accident, approximately 50 passengers had to be rescued from a train that had been stuck in the heat for hours; several travelers collapsed. With the end of the heat wave, severe thunderstorms swept across northern and eastern Germany. On the North Sea coast near Cuxhaven and in Wilhelmshaven, lightning strikes every second and strong gusts of wind caused numerous fire department call-outs and toppled trees. Thunderstorms also hit Brandenburg, including Ketzin, Beelitz, and Havelsee, where fire departments had to clear roads of fallen trees and branches well into the night.
