Such a defect of support on the B5 is almost impossible to diagnose in garage conditions without removing the strut, since it will not be possible to imitate the sharp compression of the spring, especially if it is reinforced, like mine. In older cars with a through shock absorber tower, it was much easier. Therefore, it is the last place where the cause of knocking is being sought, and before that they manage to replace all kinds of levers, bushings, pillows, tie-rod ends, etc. In fact, it’s very easy to remove a strut of this design. To do this, disconnect the two upper levers from the steering knuckle and one (any) stabilizer link bolt. That's all! YOU DO NOT NEED to take out a tie-rod end and the lower arms to do it.
